Choose Respect!

Friday 9th November 2018

Dear Parents/Guardians,

National Anti-Bullying Week – Choose Respect 12th – 16th November 2018

Next week we will be promoting anti bullying week across the whole school.

Following a consultation with over 800 children, teachers and members of the Anti-Bullying Alliance, it emerged that a top priority was showing that bullying is a behaviour choice, and that children and young people can set a positive example by opting to respect each other at school, in their homes, communities and online.

The aims of anti-bullying week are to support schools and other settings to help children and young people, school staff, parents and other professionals who work with children to understand:

 The definition of respect

That bullying is a behaviour choice

That we can respectfully disagree with each other i.e. we don’t have to be best friends or always agree with each other but we do have to respect each other

That we all need to choose to respect each other both face to face and online

This year’s theme for anti-bullying week is choose respect over bullying.

In previous years our School Council has worked together to create our own definition of bullying, which we always use to address any bullying concerns that may arise. When we refer to anti-bullying we talk about ‘Good to be me’ and use the following definition;

  • Bullying is on purpose
  • Bullying is hurtful
  • Bullying is over and over again

In our assembly we will look at the different types of bullying and our current anti-bullying policy. The children will then have opportunities in class to learn more about a particular aspect of bullying.  We will also be considering cultural respect and specifically how we all have different beliefs and celebrate important parts of our lives in different ways and that we should respect others in their beliefs.

All the above begins today with Friendship Friday when the children will be working together in their classrooms to complete activities around being a good friend.

We would like to thank you for your support, once again, during this very important week. If you would like more information on anti-bullying in schools please following the link http://www.anti-bullyingalliance.org.uk/anti-bullying-week/info-for-parents-and-carers/
