Eco School Newsletter
This term at Langley we are going to be very busy with lots of different Eco events and initiatives taking place.
Gardening Club
Our Gardening Club has been hugely successful in the autumn term and will continue throughout the year. Mrs. Coombs and children from year 1 – 4 have been working very hard to regenerate our school garden. They began by digging up weeds and preparing the soil before planting their spring bulbs and creating a herb garden. They then moved on to creating a beautiful bug hotel to attract wildlife to our garden. Gardening club used recycled and natural materials to create the hotel, which is now open to all the insects to come and stay. In December the gardening club created a driftwood Christmas tree with bauble bird feeders, a special treat for our local birds. We are very excited to see all the different things gardening club and Mrs. Coombs will be doing this Spring. Reception Garden. Our reception classes have also been working hard in their own garden. Just last week they dug up some delicious potatoes and they are going to be planting some winter pansies in the next few weeks.
Travel Ambassadors
At the end of the autumn term we appointed six year 3 Travel Ambassadors, whose job it is to make travelling to and from school safer and more active for their friends and classmates at Langley. We will be having a whole school assembly to share their roles.
Reducing Waste
Each week the year 3 litter pickers work hard to pick up any litter from within our school grounds. In addition to collecting waste the children strive to improve the school environment by promoting correct waste disposal around school. We have also recently updated our Anti Litter Policy which identifies the rights and responsibilities we have towards making Langley First School a litter free area where pupils, staff and visitors alike respect the school building and site.
Fairtrade
Year 4 have been learning about the importance of Fairtrade, what it is and why it is better to buy Fairtrade products. Building on the success of the 2017 Fair Trade coffee morning, which raised over £420 for water aid, Year 4 will be hosting another coffee morning for parents on 21.3.2018.
Spread Your Wings And Try
The date for this year’s Eco Spread Your Wings and Try day has been set for Friday 2.2.18. The whole school will be involved in various activities focussing on biodiversity. The variety of living things in a given place; whether a small stream, an extensive desert, all the forests in the world, the oceans, or the entire plane; is called its biodiversity, which is short for biological diversity. Biodiversity is important to the health of the world’s ecosystems. During our informative and fun d ay we will look at how we can make sure we reduce our impact on biodiversity. The day will aim to improve the children’s understanding and appreciation of it and of its importance and by nurturing their creativity they will come up with new ways of protecting and enhancing
biodiversity.
Healthy Travel Week
We started the term with a travel survey to find out how all the children travel to school. We are analysing the data and the Eco Team and Travel Ambassadors will work together to encourage more children to walk, cycle or scoot to school. Healthy Travel Week will be the week beginning 25.6.18, where we encourage as many children and staff to ditch their cars and find a healthier and more environmentally friendly way to travel to school. We will redo our travel survey in July and hope to see a big increase in people walking, scooting or cycling to school.
